Civil law is the set of rules and laws that deal with private matters between individuals and organizations. It covers issues such as family matters (marriage, divorce, child custody), property disputes, contracts, and personal injuries. If someone has a problem with another person or a company and wants to resolve it legally, they would generally seek a solution through civil law.

In simple terms, civil law helps people settle disagreements and protect their rights, like getting compensation for damages, enforcing contracts, or resolving conflicts related to property or family matters. Unlike criminal law, civil law focuses on resolving disputes between private parties, rather than dealing with crimes committed against society through punishments. In civil cases, the goal is usually to provide fair resolutions and remedies for the individuals involved, such as compensation or specific actions to make things right.

In Pakistan, civil law is primarily governed by the Code of Civil Procedure 1908, which has been amended over time. This code serves as the overarching procedural law for all civil proceedings. However, there are also special laws that exist and have their own specific procedural mechanisms to follow, or they may incorporate a combination of special procedures and general procedural guidelines.
